Locking your computer is one of the simplest things you can do, and it’s also one of the most overlooked. In a busy work environment, it’s easy to step away for a moment and assume everything will be fine. But leaving your device unlocked, even briefly, can create unnecessary risk.
Most people don’t think of their workplace as somewhere a problem could happen. The reality is that risk doesn’t always come from outside threats. It often comes from everyday situations, like someone accidentally accessing the wrong information or clicking something without realizing it.
When your device is unlocked, anything on your screen is accessible. That might include emails, documents, internal systems, or sensitive client information. Even without bad intent, it only takes a moment for something to be viewed, changed, or sent unintentionally.
A few common situations make this easier than you might expect. Stepping away to grab coffee, walking over to the printer, or getting pulled into a quick conversation can leave your computer unattended longer than planned. During that time, your screen is still open and visible.
Locking your device is a simple way to prevent this. It creates a quick barrier that protects your work and keeps your information private. It also ensures that when you return, everything is exactly how you left it.
In office environments especially, this habit makes a big difference. People are moving around, sharing spaces, and using nearby workstations throughout the day. Locking your computer before stepping away, even for a minute, helps maintain a consistent level of security.
The good news is that it takes almost no effort. Both Windows and Mac computers have quick ways to lock your screen instantly:
Windows: Press Windows key + L
Mac: Press Control + Command + Q
You can also lock your screen by clicking your profile icon and selecting “Lock,” but the keyboard shortcut is the fastest option. Once it becomes part of your routine, it feels just as natural as grabbing your phone or your keys before you leave.
It’s also worth remembering that not all risks are intentional. Someone might sit down at your desk thinking it’s available, or a coworker might try to help by clicking through something on your screen. Locking your device removes that possibility entirely.
This is one of those small habits that makes a big difference over time. It protects your work, your organization, and the people you work with, all without adding complexity to your day.
