Most people click their way around their computer without thinking about it. They open File Explorer. They browse through folders. They scroll through long lists of programs. It feels normal. But all that clicking adds up.
This week’s Tech Tip focuses on something your computer already does very well: search.
Both Windows 11 and Mac computers include powerful built-in search tools. On Windows, you can click the Start button or use the search bar on the taskbar and start typing. On a Mac, you can use Spotlight search. Instead of digging through folders or menus, you can let your computer find what you’re looking for.
Search is especially helpful for finding files. You don’t have to remember the exact name. Typing part of the name or even a keyword often brings it up quickly. That alone can save a surprising amount of time during the day.
It also makes opening applications easier. Instead of scrolling through a list of programs, type the first few letters of the app and press Enter.
Where search really shines is in finding system settings. Most people click through several layers of menus to adjust something like Wi-Fi, printers, display settings, or updates. Instead, try typing what you need directly into search. You can jump straight to the setting without hunting for where it’s located.
Search can even handle quick calculations. Try typing a math problem directly into the search bar. It can multiply numbers, calculate percentages, or convert units without opening a browser or calculator app. It’s a small feature, but it saves another trip through menus.
The goal isn’t to stop using folders or menus completely. It’s to stop digging when you don’t have to. The next time you catch yourself clicking through multiple screens to find something, try searching first.
Your computer is already built to find things quickly. Using search consistently removes extra clicks and makes everyday work feel simpler.Be sure to follow our weekly Tech Tips every Tuesday.
